Free Solutions to Restore Deleted Active Directory and Exchange Accounts

“God knows what I was thinking at that time! I was removing the account of ex-employee from the Exchange server but, I removed complete account of existing employee. Usually, I am very conscious while doing such type of operations but, do not know how this blunder happened from my hand. My higher authorities have given me one-week time duration to Restore deleted active directory user account, otherwise, I’ll have to pay penalty for the same. Please, someone, help me out by giving instructions to recover deleted exchange account.”

It is an hour-to-hour requirement for the solution to regain back removed Active Directory and Exchange accounts. The sudden removal of user profile leads to lost in all mailbox information. Therefore, in this post, we are going to provide the solution to restore accidentally deleted Active Directory and Exchange accounts.

Recover Deleted Exchange Account / Exchange User Mailbox

Depending upon two different situations, there exist variations in the manual method of regaining back the mailboxes. So, first, you have to determine the current situation and then go for a particular method.

Situation #1: When Cache Exchange Isn’t Running

You have to enable the AD Recycle Bin and then, continue with further proceedings. There are two methods to activate Active Directory Recycle Bin i.e., Ldp.exe and Enable-ADOptionalFeature Active Directory module cmdlet. Description of both these methods is given below.

#1: Use Ldp.exe

  • Open Run window on your PC and type exe. Press Enter key to continue
  • Connect with the server by clicking on Connection >> Connect >> Bind. Here, the server will be the one that is hosting dense root domain of recent AD DS platform
  • Click on View >> Tree >> Select Configuration Directory Partition in the BaseDN. After all, this hit on OK.
  • Double-click on the distinguished name of configuration directory partition and then on CN=Partitions Container in the console tree
  • Right-click on the Distinguished Name and choose Modify option
    Note – On this stage, you have to verify that DN box is completely blank
  • Type enableOptionalFeature in the Edit Entry attribute and mention CN=Partitions, DC=mydomain, CN=Configuration and DC=com:766ddcd8-acd0-445e-f3b9-a7f9b6744f2a
  • Perform swapping in between the swap com and domain by using a suitable forest root domain name of AD DS environment
  • Click on Add >> Enter >> Run in operations
  • On the current screen, look for msDS-EnabledFeature attribute and ensure that values are mentioned as DC=com, CN=Configuration, CN=WindowsNT, CN=Services, CN=Optional Features, CN=Recycle Bin Feature

#2: Enable-ADOptionalFeature Active Directory Module Cmdlet

  • Click on the Start >> Administrative Tools and then right-click on Windows PowerShell Active Directory module. From the list of options, choose Run as Administrator
  • Type Enable-ADOptionalFeature -Identity -Scope -Target in the Windows PowerShell window
  • Execute the above-typed command

With any one of the 2 ways, you are now done with enabling of Active Directory Recycle Bin. Get back the mailbox by using Connect-Mailbox -Identity “” -Database -User “username”. Now it is the time to restore deleted Active Directory / Exchange account with help of following steps :

  1. Open Exchange System Manager and look for a mailbox store
  2. Click on the Mailboxes object and then, on the Cleanup Agent. This will give assurance that the mailbox is in the disconnected state
  3. Right-click on the disconnected mailbox and choose Reconnect
  4. Select the suitable user from the list and click on OK button

Finally, end up the entire procedure by reconnecting removed mailbox with the new user object.

a) Launch Active Directory Users and Computers window
b) Click on Create New User Object >> Mark >> Create an Exchange Mailbox
c) Connect the new user object with existing mailbox by above Steps from (1) to (4)

Situation #2: When Cache Exchange Is In-Running Mode

Users can Restore deleted active directory in this scenario by performing the following steps:

  • Create a new account
  • Re-add user into it
  • Setup email profile, and
  • Import PST file

Importing of Outlook PST file will begin the restoration procedure. Regaining back of deleted mailboxes is quite easy in cached Exchange mode, in comparison with the situation when Cache mode is disabled.
